Cost of Living in Central Oregon: Bend vs. Redmond vs. Sisters
Central Oregon is one of the fastest-growing parts of the state, and each city here offers a different lifestyle at a different price. Whether you're relocating for a job, for retirement, or just for a change of scenery, it helps to understand the real cost differences between Bend, Redmond, and Sisters before you commit.
Rental Costs
Bend is the priciest rental market in the region. A one-bedroom apartment runs $1,600 to $1,900 a month, and a three-bedroom house will be $2,400 to $3,500 depending on the neighborhood. The west side and downtown command the highest rents.
Redmond is considerably more affordable. One-bedroom apartments average $1,200 to $1,500, and three-bedroom homes go for $1,800 to $2,600. The town has seen rapid growth recently, with new construction adding inventory that helps keep prices in check.
Sisters has a small-town market with limited rentals available. When something opens up, it goes fast. Expect to pay prices close to Bend: $1,500 to $1,800 for a one-bedroom and $2,200 to $3,000 for a three-bedroom, with fewer options to choose from.
Utilities and Essentials
Utility costs stay fairly consistent across all three cities. Electric bills run $100 to $180 a month depending on your heating setup and home size. Natural gas adds $50 to $120 in the winter months. Internet is $60 to $90 for a solid plan. Water and sewer usually come in at $60 to $100.
One thing that catches newcomers off guard is heating costs. Winters are cold out here, and heating an older, poorly insulated house can get expensive fast. Before signing a lease, ask about insulation, window quality, and what kind of heating system the home has.
Groceries and Dining
Grocery prices run about 5 to 10% above the national average in all three cities. Bend has the most options, from budget-friendly WinCo to upscale spots like Newport Avenue Market. Redmond has Costco, which pulls shoppers from the whole region. Sisters has a Bi-Mart and a small Ray's Food Place; for a full grocery run, most folks drive to Bend or Redmond.
Eating out costs noticeably more in Bend, where the restaurant scene is strong but priced to match. Redmond and Sisters have great local spots at slightly friendlier price points.
Transportation
You need a car in Central Oregon. Public transit through Cascades East Transit exists, but it's limited compared to what you'd find in a metro area. Gas runs $0.10 to $0.20 above the national average. Commuting between cities is common: Redmond to Bend takes about 20 minutes, and Sisters to Bend is around 25.
